Fresh flowers, boxwood, magnolia and white lights. I will have my hands full this weekend.  I plan to stay on theme and focused. It won’t happen like that though.

Thankful II

Reflecting back on this past year I am thankful for three things. The happiness of my family, good health, and a firm foundation of love for my children to come and go from as they grow older. I strive to keep that firm foundation of love decorated fabulously and I do believe that all of my boys appreciate it even if they don’t admit it.

Harvest moon in my family room, Gray Walker Interiors.

I think that is one of the things that led me to interior design… I am a homebody at heart. I much prefer a night in to a large crowd. My entire house can be mentally rearranged  when I concentrate and wander. Two opposing concepts summarize my creative process.  The same thing happens at my client’s homes. It isn’t unusual to be in a site meeting when something completely off topic explodes out of my mouth. That is the beauty of my long term relationships with homes and their owner’s… It just spills out when I least expect it.

This past year some unpredictable circumstances kept me in bed for quite some time. Home is your refuge from the world and it should be a place that comforts you when the going gets tough. Aesthetic beauty  comforts me and guiding others to achieve that comfort in their homes is what I love to do. I am thankful that I can do that every day!

Forever Green

The leaves are coming down and it’s about time for my gardens to rest for the winter. I am thinking about going all green this year with  low maintenance containers that will work well as my Christmas decorations with some added oomph in December. Here are some images that light my fire…

Celebrate in Southern Style

It is hard to believe the holidays are upon us. I was so thrilled to see my tabletop designs in Southern Cottage magazine for their “Celebrate in Southern Style” issue.

Cover Southern Cottage featuring Gray Walker’s tabletops.

The greenery and roaring fire on the cover make me want to curl up on the sofa with a hot cocktail. My spread is about dressing the table for holiday gatherings which can be a daunting task. Silver, linens, flowers and a concept can be overwhelming especially with an overextended to do list. I hope the article helps alleviate some of that stress and puts people in a “this is fun” frame of mind.

Garden club luncheon by Gray Walker in Southern Cottage.

First, come up with a mood. Do you want to have a formal vibe or a casual vibe? If you want a garden theme are you thinking English or tropical? I chose a garden theme for one tabletop and went with a structured English garden look. My passion for tropical  treasures landed on the after Christmas in Florida tabletop. It is my favorite time of the season with very special friends from all over the country.

Next think about the materials you want to use. Your china is a great starting point. Take cues from the colors and design to begin to pull your elements together.

Dinner at eight by Gray Walker in Southern Cottage.

Shortly after making that decision begin to think about your centerpiece. What flowers are available to you and what will hold your centerpiece? Do you want a single arrangement with votives scattered or a trail of arrangements? Be sure everyone can make good eye contact. My husband has no problem moving a centerpiece much to my dismay.

A beautiful tabletop makes your guests feel special and adds your own self expression in entertaining. I am not a cook so my personality shines through in my decoration and presentation. It’s a way to let your family and friends know how much you care.

Don’t be tied down to traditional holiday colors. It’s nice to step outside of the box with your colors. Metallics can give a sparkle to any color combination to make it feel like a special time of the year. Happy almost holiday season.

Leopard Love

I have been stuck on the theme “modern classics” lately while there is also the concept of “true classic”. The leopard motif is what I call a “true classic”. Often clients will ask when I pull a leopard print if it is trendy and will it go out of style. This happens more often when fashion is in a big moment of animal prints. Leopard is a true classic that will NEVER go out of style. I believe every room should have a bit of animal print and a dash of black. It gives any room good weight, oomph, style and contraversy. It’s like creating the perfect “10” in a room.

Lusting for Lucite

Why do I love lucite…

Screen Shot 2015-09-22 at 1.04.11 PM

A mix of styles by Charles Faudree with a lucite table.

It is non committal . I am all about the material that just melts in with the things around it. Lucite is easy to be with.

Lucite perfection against an antique desk via Elle Decor.

It is visually weightless. Sometimes your eye needs a break when reading a room. Lucite gives you a “visual rest” while taking in other important objects.

It’s transparency allows you to see things behind or underneath. A great concept for the gorgeous wallcovering or antique oushak with to die for coloration.

Lucite is a modern classic. It is like a great leopard print to me, every room needs some.

Table Talk

A coffee table is the key element that anchors a seating area. Height, width, depth, material, leg style and apron detail are a few of the thoughts I have in mind as I scour images looking for “the one”. I like a high coffee table, somewhere between coffee and tea table height. A chunky table with a sexy  leg and sleek apron is always a winner. A coffee table should make a subtle statement… but be sure to make one.

Modern classic is my “go to” vibe for a coffee table. Clean lines pull a seating area together no matter what is in your grouping. A table with a shelf is great for stacking books adding another layer visually.

Screen Shot 2015-09-14 at 2.45.21 PM

Material is a fun aspect that can add another dimension to your selection. Mirror, lacquer, leather, bone, mother of pearl… the list really goes on. A mix of finishes is mandatory in a great room. A coffee table can interject that unexpected “bit of bling” you have been looking for.

Whatever your style may be let your coffee table be a fresh take on classic chic and beef it up. Let your proportions be a little gutsy and anchor the table with thick coffee table books and a nice orchid to gracefully lifting the eye up. Enjoy the search.

So Long Summer

I hope your summer was a time spent replenishing your soul. Spending time in the water and the sun has prepared me for a six month period I will be working on a big project. I have never taken an extended period of time away from my work … I decided to this summer!

Screen Shot 2015-09-08 at 10.36.14 AM

A shot I took in flight.

It will be interesting to see if truly taking a step back from the sometimes crazy pace changes my approach to chaos. Sitting at my desk working also creates routine and organization that I miss very much.

Screen Shot 2015-09-08 at 10.51.25 AM

I have ordered all new desk accessories!

I do think creative thinkers absorb inspiration more when they aren’t amped up on deadline overload . Reading, travel, photographing and writing are all part of  creative translation for me. I never take a break from that part of my work.
